Scope and Contents
These petitions and resolutions are close pieces, possibly written by the person proposing the action, as a note for the secretary when copying his minutes. Most of them are transcribed into the Minutes of the Academy but

Overview
Charles Eastwick Smith (1820-1900) was an engineer and inventor involved in railroad, ironworks and steel. His interest in botany led him to membership at the Academy of Natural Sciences where he held several positions from 1851 until his death. Over the years Smith compiled an herbarium of specimens found within 15 miles of Philadelphia, which he bequeathed to the Academy. Philadelphia businessman and president of the Tacomy Chemical Works, he joined the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1847. In 1867, when the trustees of the building fund were making a concerted effort to get money for the
new building, Charles Lennig donated to the Academy some chrome ore lands in Chester County. These were sold, but a royalty clause retained some income for the Academy besides the principle gift. These papers have one letter
